Internet. My profiles in I Like, Bebo, Friendfeed, Twitter and Facebook.

13.11.09 – Sonny Rollins. Will you be at the London Jazz Festival? And will you be at the opening night at the Barbican on Friday 13 November? There should be the well-known Sonny Rollins and also Kurt Elling, Natalie Merchant and Sheila Jordan, which I do not know and which you may vote for my blog below. You could add some interpretations of them to the list…

– Sheila Jordan and Steve Kuhn

John Scofield. Also today, Friday 13 November, John Scofield at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and, at 7.45 and 9.30pm, Astillero – who are they? – at the Purcell Room. They should be a Buenos Aires’ new tango group.

– John Scofield director, Rock Follies, Russel T. Davies, Howard Schuman and soft-porn musical.

Last, but not least, a question. I read a text about this festival and I wondered what “tickets are flying out the door” means. I looked up this expression in my dictionary, but no answer.

Elling – November 14. Kurt Elling will be this evening, Saturday November 14, at the PizzaExpress Jazz Club, at 10.30pm with Dedicated To You. The Music of Coltrane and Hartman. I know who John Coltrane is, but Hartman?!

Puente. Dear Londoners or citizens who live near London, would you like to win two pairs of free tickets for a concert by the jazzist Omar Puente? He will play on Tuesday 17 November at Jazz Cafe in Camden and you should answer this question:

What is the name of Omar Puente’s debut solo album,

being launched at Jazz Cafe during the Jazz Festival?

This is the e-mail to send your answer and full contact details to – and only by 10 am on Monday 9 November.

10.09.09 – Bill Frisell. I do not know a lot about Bill Frisell, but has he known Eyvind Kang and Rudy Royston for many years, are they good friends and do they trust each other? They will be on September 10th at the Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut… And on Saturday, September 12, the Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer Project with Greg Leisz, Eyvind Kang and Viktor Kraus will be in Urbana. At the University of Illinois at the Krannert Center for the W2W Guitar Festival.

08.08.09 Bill Frisell Trio, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen will be on Saturday August 8 at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in Hoxeyville, Milwaukee. At 5.30 pm…

02.08.09 – Frisell, jazz and… Will you be in Atlanta on August 2 at 6:30 pm at the concert of Bill Frisell? He will play at the “National Black Arts Festival” with films that should be curated by the so-called Pan African Film Festival… There should also be a discussion with Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer Russell Gunn.

Texas and… I would also ask you what do you think of the music couple Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz… How were their concerts? They should have taken place at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas; at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio; at The 5 Spot in Atlanta, GA; at the Square Room Knoxville, Tennessee; at the Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville and at the Student Union Great Hall of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, both in North Carolina…

12.06.09 Do you know the vocal ensemble “Stile antico”? They will be on tour in the USA from Friday June, 12. This time their first concert in America will be in Boston at the Emmanuel Church (15 Newbury St) for the Boston Early Music Festival. Tickets will cost from 22 to  56 dollars, if you would like to go, and… will I write about other concerts of this group?

14.06.09 Oh, yes… On Sunday, June 14, they will be at Christ the King Church in Old Lyme for the Connecticut Early Music Festival at 6 pm. The next programmed concert will then find place on June 26 at 8 pm…

The Observer. Surely they were reviewed by The Observer, one of the most known British Sunday papers, and I heard their interpretation of “Ego Flos Campi” by Clemens non Papa and I was quite impressed…  Their third album is Song of Songs, published by Harmonia mundi, and their other CDs are Heavenly Harmonies and Music for Compline. And…

Trovesi. It almost starts with Claudio Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” – the composition by the famous musician lived between the 16th and 17th centuries – with the “Toccata”,  and then goes on later with “Ah, fors’è lui che l’anima” and “È Piquillo, un bel gagliardo”, extracted from Verdi’s “La traviata”.

Music flower. “Profumo di Violetta” by the very famous Italian jazzist Gianluigi Trovesi focuses on the Italian opera and takes its name first of all from the important protagonist of “La traviata”, but also – without a capital letter – from the flower, the violet (in fact it may be very like to the meaning “Scent of violet”). The work also includes “Il cavallo scalpita” from Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria rusticana”, “Stizzoso, mio stizzoso” from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s “La serva padrona”, “Largo al factotum” from Gioacchino Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and an excerpt inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca”. Gianluigi Trovesi plays this album with a large North-Italian wind orchestra – about 60 musicians of the  “Filarmonica Mousiké” – that may be named a “banda” in his mother tongue and includes percussion players.

From 8:30 pm the Mc Coy Tiner Trio will play with Bill Frisell, Gary Bartz and John Scofield. Mariza will sing at 10:15 pm – a quarter before Steve Winwood and later than the John Zorn Cobra – with Chuco Valdéz and Tito Paris and John Patitucci will be with Roy Haynes and David Kikoski.

On the program there are also Jamie Cullum at 6 ‘o clock in the evening and Seal at 7:30 pm or the John Scofield Piety Street Band at 5:45 pm and Hiromi and Akiko Yano at 10 pm. Time also for Uri Caine at 7.15 pm and Bill Frisell at 9:30 pm.

Bud Shank, passed this April 2, 2009, and the obituaries for him in the New York Times (maybe three dogs named Andante, Allegro and Rubato, and the Los Angeles Jazz Institute) and the Guardian (camouflaged emotions, devoiusness of method, the underpinning of a “superb” technique on saxophone and flute, and honing a style).

John Scofield will play in Norway at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival on Thursday July 2.

Music, Morocco and British leading actors

UK’s leading actors and a protest letter addressed to voters about BBC.

Appeal to voters. In an article by Vanessa Thorpe and the Observer.

Music playlists. Here there are playlists of mine about the Asian Network and 6 Music.

One Republic and tv. One Republic, All The Right Moves at abc’s Jimmy Kimmel Live (video).

Morocco and Spain. Have you already been as tourists in Marrakech and Morocco? From the Netherlands? Your experience there? And Alicante, Playa Xagò or Santiago de Compostela in Spain?

Mortensen, Clooney, films… and music? Viggo Mortensen and The Road (trailer) and Up in the Air with George Clooney (trailer).

David Bowie. A page “Film Weekly” by The Observer (audio) and…. “I am a passenger” by David Bowie. Will I write about music in these films?

07.12.08 – Does music redeem? Have you seen the French film Les Choristes (The Chorus)? The website of the British newspaper The Guardian defined it “a postwar boarding school drama”. “Set in an authoritarian reform school in 1949, – the Guardian adds – the film focuses on the attempts of a dissident master to subvert the draconian regime by teaching the boys to sing, and shows the redemptive power of music on the boys”.

Draconian. I wondered what “draconian” means and then I looked up the word in my English dictionary and found these meanings – “of or relating to Draco or his code of laws” and “harsh”. Instead, Draco is described as “7th century B.C., Athenian statesman, whose code of laws (621) prescribed death for most offences”.

Film for families? Moreover, there are other opinions in that article. “It is a family feelgood movie – the journalist Amelia Gentleman writes – with a saccharine gloss which has chimed with a new French nostalgia for the postwar era. Due for release in Britain in January, it is being promoted as an export to rival the international success of Amélie in 2002”.

Well, that is what this quality newspaper writes, but first of all I would ask you whether it is really a family feelgood movie. Maybe it is partially, at least according to me, but I do not think it is that way a lot. After all and as an add to this opinion of mine, I do not think it has a saccharine gloss and the reference to Amélie is really very fascinating with hindsight because both movies are two very nice French films (but why ever is there no reference to Chocolat?).
Fashionable singing? Eventually I read about a particular in the article I did not know – that is “Les Choristes is a remake of the 1945 French hit La Cage aux Rossignols (The Cage of Nightingales)” – and, moreover, we can read an opinion of the director Christophe Barratier about the plot too. “This isn’t – he says – a particularly fashionable subject”. I do not know what are your opinions about it, but personally I think that he may be right. Maybe he really is or more probably he is not… Who knows but you…
