Ehm, 15 years of work experience are quite a lot for a post of Head of Operations Unit at the European Institute for Gender Equality, based in Vilnius, Lithuania. Ehm again, the deadline is today, Tuesday November 10. And who knows how Lithuania is for tourists… Furthermore, for a vote about travel destinations, please see very below.
“French” secretary. If you not only like words of French as merci, bonjour and bonsoir, but also have a good command of this language, you may apply for a post of secretary at the Eurojust in The Hague (the Netherlands). In this case, there is much more time available as you may apply till Thursday, November 12. Please let me know if you will be selected.
03.11.09 Maybe you are an expert on ICT. And, furthermore, you would become a researcher at the IPTS (the Institute for Perspective Technology Studies), based in Seville, Spain. You could work at the Information Society Unit in the field ICT Industry Competitiveness and Innovation in Europe if you will apply till Tuesday November 3rd.
Managing. The Frontex from Warsaw (Poland) is looking for a Management Assistant to the Administration Division with nine years of professional experience and an “excellent, close to native command of written and oral English”.
30.10.2009 It should be very difficult to become a Director in the Directorate for General Affairs (DGA) at the European Economic and Social Committe (EESC), an EU institution. But if you would like to apply, you have to do it by the closing date of Thursday October 29. Please consider that fifteen years of postgraduate professional experience – and five of them in a management position – are quite a lot… Aren’t they?
Head of Human Resource for the TEN-T EA (Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency), based in Brussels, Belgium, and I believe that quite a lot of workers are working in this field. There are other posts of Assistant to the Director and, till Friday October 30, of GIS Manager (Geographical Information System). Any suggestion about GIS?
26.10.2009 Working as a Senior Analyst at the FRONTEX in Warsaw? It could be a possibility till Monday, October 26, and you could also apply, but till a day later, Tuesday October 27, for a post of Senior Assistant in the same city. May I ask you why are you looking for a job? Are you working for a society that produces cars?
The Applied Infectious Disease Epidemiology Conference is an occasion to learn some words like EPIET, the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training, EAN, the EPIET Alumni network, FETP, Field Epidemiology Training Program, and EACCME, the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
The conference will be held inStockholm, Sweden, from MondayOctober 26 to Wednesday October 28 and I would ask you whether you know professor Johan Giesecke, Chief Scientist at ECDC, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Surely, the influenza A (H1N1) will be the most discussed topic there, won’t it? And what does CME stand for in CME credits? What about ESCAIDE?
Maybe it is also a problem for both parents… Maybe you agree with this question-opinion according to which “Why it will be no holiday for single parents if a child is hit by swine flu?”. Or maybe you do not. Who knows…
But let’s return to swine flu and poorer countries… This is a comment that is interesting in my opinion. «While, to a citizen of the rich EU, – we may read – swine flu might be “less than a regular flu”, for somebody with no access to modern hospitals, Tamiflu and vaccines, and whose basic health is already not so good, this might be a nightmare (Question of the week: Should people travel abroad and risk the spread of swine flu to unaffected areas?)». And: “Of course the travel industry will support travel – they get most of the profits, not the local people”.
- – -
It is very important, in my opinion, not to go and “stop doing charity work” and charity trips in Africa to avoid swine flu spreads even there. And do you agree with Professor Robert Dingwall, a member of the Department of Health’s committee on ethical aspects of pandemic influenza, expressed in The Observer? Or do you agree with the so-called Year Out Group and Richard Oliver, its chief executive, or Steve Holt of Worldwide Experience and Catherine Raynor of VSO? The online version of the newspaper sums up – with Denis Campbell, its health correspondent – the situation in Britain and writes about Kenya and some Nottingham University students or World Health Organisation.
- – -
Swine flu has caused terrible consequences in the UK. “The death toll – Denis Campbell has written for The Guardian – has reached 16, the latest being six-year-old schoolgirl Chloe Buckley from north-west London”. As for London, The Guardian adds some lines later: “Hospitals in swine flu hotspots such as London and the West Midlands which could become overwhelmed by the number of patients also have plans to transfer some to other hospitals which could be 10 or 20 miles away”.
Changes will take place in Ireland, as Eithne Donnellan reported in the Irish Times on July 10. “Latest figures – she summed up – show 11 further cases of swine flu were confirmed here yesterday including three further cases of the virus being transmitted within the country, bringing the total number of cases confirmed to date to 104″. And some lines later she adds: “Of the 104 cases confirmed just four were aged over 65 years”.
- – -
Swine flu concerned the G8 summit. The senior climate change adviser, Michael Jacobs, “followed negotiations by phone”, as Patrick Wintour writes for the Guardian. Jacobs “was banned from attending the G8 summit in Italy for fear he would pass the contagious disease to Barack Obama and other world leaders” after having contracted the disease during climate change talks in Mexico.
- – -
A need for vigilance? And what about Mexico, Spain, Egypt, China and Honk Kong if we talk about swine flu? And the flu’s changes widens the discussion to viruses as well as the total cases of swine flu in the UK let the British think of possible mutations of the virus or a possbile new outbreak during the cold season. And London is affected by the cases and the swine flu has been confirmed in Ireland.
Much more about the subject is the EU health commissioner who said that suspected cases were being investigated in some countries – Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Greece and the Czech Republic – or cases around the world in countries like the USA, Germany, New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Or if you would like to get some deeper information about Italy’s confirming its first case, then you could go to this page about a case in the town of Massa.
Influenza pandemic activities. Will you attend the media workshop of the EMeA (European Medicines Agency) in London on Thursday, 10 September? Have you arrived there from London City Airport, Heathrow airport, Gatwick, Standsted or from St Pancrass International by Eurostar? And are you interested in advanced therapy medicinal products, international cooperation or safety of medicines and clinical trials in third countries? Or maybe in paediatric legislation, methodologies for the assessment of benefits and risks of medicines? And influenza pandemic activities? This regulatory environment for medicines in Europe…

Robbie Williams returns… “To slave over a record and not get the reaction you hoped for must be a terrible disappointment. But with some stars – pop musicians and actors being the worst – any passing comment other than World-Rogering Work of Genius is akin to lying in wait for their kids with a water pistol full of swine flu“.
I know that Barack Obama is under pressure for his decisions concerning the health system, but there is another reason to criticise him… Why no reactions by Greenpeace and WWF against Obama and his government that would let Westinghouse go on with Italian policy for – improbable? – nuclear energy? No nuclear energy in Italy is good as in Denmark although Italy is not Denmark… And what about Steven Chu, US energy secretary, who is behaving as a bad politician from this point of view? I am not suggesting that the Republicans are better, but some Democrats are not good.
- Were environmentalists “elated at the election of Barack Obama, and his appointment of the Nobel Prize winning physicist Steven Chu as Energy Secretary”?! Were they really elated?
Furthermore, there was a tv program in Italy that found serious problems in managing nuclear waste in Italy or reports that were not written in a good way… Without considering a ship that was sunk by ‘ndrangheta, the mafia in Calabria, near an Italian coast… Or even a mountain that has been found radioactive in Italy…
- – -
I am sure Barack Obama will be against the interest of Westinghouse having to do with the possible – or impossible – nuclear energy project in Italy. Maybe there will be no more nuclear energy produced in Italy…
I have read an article by Oliver Morgan and the Observer of Sunday 3 July 2005. It reads: “Last week, BNFL confirmed it was to sell its Westinghouse reactor design business, and senior government officials believe BNG, BNFL’s decommissioning and operations business, is incapable of winning work on UK sites in future without a partner or new owner”.
You may also read the following sentence in that article. “A damning internal report into a major leak of radioactive liquid at British Nuclear Fuels’ Thorp reprocessing plant at Sellafield has found that management was complacent and that the incident was not detected for eight months”. Did everything happen that way?
Another sentence reads: “Thorp has been shut down since detection of the leak, and senior figures at the NDA believe it should not reopen”. How is the situation now?
Dear Londoners or citizens who live near London, would you like to win two pairs of free tickets for a concert by the jazzist Omar Puente? He will play on Tuesday 17 November at Jazz Cafe in Camden and you should answer this question:
What is the name of Omar Puente’s debut solo album,
being launched at Jazz Cafe during the Jazz Festival?
This is the e-mail to send your answer and full contact details to – and only by 10 am on Monday 9 November.
10.09.09 I do not know a lot about Bill Frisell, but has he known Eyvind Kang and Rudy Royston for many years, are they good friends and do they trust each other? They will be on September 10th at the Infinity Hall in Norfolk, Connecticut… And on Saturday, September 12, the Bill Frisell’s Disfarmer Project with Greg Leisz, Eyvind Kang and Viktor Kraus will be in Urbana. At the University of Illinois at the Krannert Center for the W2W Guitar Festival.
08.08.09 Bill Frisell Trio, Tony Scherr and Kenny Wollesen will be on Saturday August 8 at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in Hoxeyville, Milwaukee. At 5.30 pm…
02.08.09 Will you be in Atlanta on August 2 at 6:30 pm at the concert of Bill Frisell? He will play at the “National Black Arts Festival” with films that should be curated by the so-called Pan African Film Festival… There should also be a discussion with Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer Russell Gunn.
- – -
I would also ask you what do you think of the music couple Bill Frisell and Greg Leisz… How were their concerts? They should have taken place at the Continental Club in Austin, Texas; at the Canal Street Tavern in Dayton, Ohio; at The 5 Spot in Atlanta, GA; at the Square Room Knoxville, Tennessee; at the Grey Eagle Music Hall in Asheville and at the Student Union Great Hall of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, both in North Carolina…
12.06.09 Do you know the vocal ensemble “Stile antico”? They will be on tour in the USA from Friday June, 12. This time their first concert in America will be in Boston at the Emmanuel Church (15 Newbury St) for the Boston Early Music Festival. Tickets will cost from 22 to 56 dollars, if you would like to go, and… will I write about other concerts of this group?
14.06.09 Oh, yes… On Sunday, June 14, they will be at Christ the King Church in Old Lyme for the Connecticut Early Music Festival at 6 pm. The next programmed concert will then find place on June 26 at 8 pm…
Surely they were reviewed by The Observer, one of the most known British Sunday papers, and I heard their interpretation of “Ego Flos Campi” by Clemens non Papa and I was quite impressed… Their third album is Song of Songs, published by Harmonia mundi, and their other CDs are Heavenly Harmonies and Music for Compline. And…
Trovesi. It almost starts with Claudio Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” – the composition by the famous musician lived between the 16th and 17th centuries – with the “Toccata”, and then goes on later with “Ah, fors’è lui che l’anima” and “È Piquillo, un bel gagliardo”, extracted from Verdi’s “La traviata”.
“Profumo di Violetta” by the very famous Italianjazzist Gianluigi Trovesi focuses on the Italian opera and takes its name first of all from the important protagonist of “La traviata”, but also – without a capital letter – from the flower, the violet (in fact it may be very like to the meaning “Scent of violet”). The work also includes “Il cavallo scalpita” from Pietro Mascagni’s “Cavalleria rusticana”, “Stizzoso, mio stizzoso” from Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s “La serva padrona”, “Largo al factotum” from Gioacchino Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia” and an excerpt inspired by Giacomo Puccini’s “Tosca”. Gianluigi Trovesi plays this album with a large North-Italian wind orchestra – about 60 musicians of the ”Filarmonica Mousiké” – that may be named a “banda” in his mother tongue and includes percussion players.
- Najee and Lomon Andrews (“Fallin’ in love with you”)
- Cannonball Adderley (“Mercy Mercy Mercy”) – I hope the contents of the linked blog are correct…
Wynton Marsalis – “The Razor Rim” from his album “He and She”
12.07.09 On Sunday July 12 Wynton Marsalis will play in Rotterdam at the “Northsea Jazz Festival” in the Amazon Hall at 6:45 and 8:45 pm. From 8:30 pm the Mc Coy Tiner Trio will play with Bill Frisell, Gary Bartz and John Scofield. Mariza will sing at 10:15 pm – a quarter before Steve Winwood and later than the John Zorn Cobra – with Chuco Valdéz and Tito Paris and John Patitucci will be with Roy Haynes and David Kikoski.
On the program there are also Jamie Cullum at 6 ‘o clock in the evening and Seal at 7:30 pm or the John Scofield Piety Street Band at 5:45 pm and Hiromi and Akiko Yano at 10 pm. Time also for Uri Caine at 7.15 pm and Bill Frisell at 9:30 pm.
- Bud Shank, passed this April 2, 2009, and the obituaries for him in the New York Times (maybe three dogs named Andante, Allegro and Rubato, and the Los Angeles Jazz Institute) and the Guardian (camouflaged emotions, devoiusness of method, the underpinning of a “superb” technique on saxophone and flute, and honing a style).
- John Scofield will play in Norway at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival on Thursday July 2.
What about kayaking near Port Angeles, in the state of Washington, or elsewhere?
01.10.09 A lot of talking about the owner of the football team Akragas of Agrigento – Sicily, Italy – who dedicated win to mafia boss.
13.07.09 Well, let’s sum up the final results at Wimbledon… After London, 15 Grand Slams for the Swiss Roger Federer who triumphed over the American Andy Roddick, as the journalist Paul Newman reports for “The Independent”.
The Californian twins, Bob and Mike Bryan, lost men’s doubles final to Daniel Nestor of Canada and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, as Nick Harris informs from Wimbledon as The Independent’s correspondent. Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus 7-6 6-2 and the duo of both Serena and Venus “powered to a 7-6 6-4 victory over Australia’s Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs”, as Kylie MacLellan writes in The Guardian.
- Oh, Martina Navratilova…
And do you think “Venus versus Serena is like the Cold War without the Russians”? And just other questions. Do you know Serena’s favourite book is Harry Potter? And what have writers to do with tennis in London? Chekhov and Tolstoy, Nabokov or Dostoevsky and, in another part of the world, Tennessee Williams… Dinara Safina still holds No. 1 ranking and won title in Rome, as an American website writes.
Shrewsbury would be birthplace of Charles Darwin. This town would be in the UK, in the West Midlands, about 60 miles west of Birmingham. I would also write to you that you may vote for the best travel destination for a poll of this blog. Please see below and yuo may also add new places…
01.12.2008 Here’s the “Historic Center of Venice Flooded” as an American newspaper – the New York Times – refers. More or less the same text in the British Guardian and another English newspaper, The Telegraph, gives some advice for travellers. Bbc News uses some photos or titles “Venice is hit by serious flooding” and Cnn “Parts of Venice neck deep in flood water” or AlJazeera “Venice hit by severe flooding”. Instead, the Huffington Post chooses “Venice Hit By Worst Flooding In More Than 20 Years” and Euronews “Flooding alert in Venice”.

The Wall Street financier Bernard “Bernie” Madoff pleaded guilty last March “in front of a New York courtroom”. I am referring to an article by the British newspaper “The Guardian” according to which Mr. Madoff confessed to 11 criminal charges of fraud, money-laundering, false statements and perjury and of “operating a corrupt business empire dating back to the early 1990s”.
The “once-respected Wall Street fixture”, who might be condemned next June to a punishment of “150-year jail term”, “has been the subject of death threats”, according to the newspaper, and “was surrounded by a tight security detail”. I think this aspect may be important to demonstrate how the economic turmoil has affected the everyday life of most Americans. If someone receives a death threat, something very important should be happened, shouldn’t it? Unless the USA are a country where very mad people live…
Madoff – the journalist Andrew Clark writes – described in the courtroom “how his scheme originated in the early 1990s when a recession made it difficult to produce healthy returns. Instead of investing in stocks and shares, he began using new deposits to pay out fake profits to existing clients”. What follow next in the Guardian’s article by Andrew Clark is: “The financier said that at the outset, he had been falsifying records on a temporary basis”. Moreover, Madoff “described laundering money through a Londonbranch of his company to create a false paper trail”. The newspaper, like many media in that days, used the expressions “Ponzi scheme” and “pyramid selling in the US” (cash from new customers or investors – Phillip Inman explains in the Guardian – is given to existing investors). And this situation should have affected areas like Florida, Switzerland, the UK,
But just return now to the texts I have written about Christmas and financial turmoil…
Christmas time – 05.11.09. Maybe Christmas Market in Prague and Czech Republic? There is the Hotel Tiepolo with prices from 45 euros in a single standard room during low season (from January 7 to March 31 and from November 4 to December 26) to 209 euros for a quintupla superior room during holiday time (from March 21 to March 25, May 1 to May 4 and December 27 to January 6). And you could also vote about travel destinations for my blog…Please see below. Do you also know that a pound should be exchanged with 89 eurocents and a dollar with 1,48 euros?
24.12.08 How is Christmas according to three British newspapers? The Independent writes about Christmas in Basra (Iraq) and the Guardian offers its readers a travel quiz and a dinner guide or writes about the British government that “slams” a television channel over Ahmadinejad Christmas message.
The Telegraph gives importance to Queen Elizabeth’s emphasis on family and refers her acknowledgement that this Christmas was a “sombre occasion” for many people who had lost their jobs or their homes because of the financial turmoil. Duncan Gardham, the Telegraph’s security correspondent reports on the alternative Christmas message and Matthew Moore summarises the archbishops’ blames.
